Curricula

"The ability to design, adapt, and evaluate curricula, technology, media, and other resources that meet the specific instructional and language-related needs and abilities of adult English language learners"

Throughout APLNG 806, I evaluated the instructional needs of ELLs and the instructional strategies of teachers weekly by reading and analyzing classroom transcripts. I also completed a classroom observation (my third observation of the program) and examined the instruction and language used in the classroom. I adapted lesson plans and course materials for hypothetical classroom contexts. During my time in APLNG 806, I practiced evaluating textbooks, formats for lesson plans, and appropriate assessments for the classroom. Finally, I designed a course for ELLs.

Excerpts from Reflective Tasks:
--“Students have to figure out what is appropriate for the language classroom, and what is not. This can be difficult since it is often hidden or implied. This is where the implications for teachers step in. Teachers must be aware that their hidden messages are influencing how students communicate inside and outside of class.”

--“This video shows that people remember the information they were taught years before (for me, almost 10 years ago), so why make the information useless instead of useful? If I was taught the same amount of information, even with the same classroom environment, with authentic materials, I would be much better off communicating in the real world. Keeping this in mind, I will make it a goal to dedicate more time finding videos online, news articles, podcasts, music, and other forms of authentic media to share with my students. I try to do this already, but knowing how much information my students are capable of remembering only pushes me further.”

--“Reflecting on this week’s lesson of differentiation, I thought about my own personal teaching approach. I need to be more aware of how I differentiate tasks, making sure I do more than just make them different. I also need to make sure I have clear goals and I understand what each of my students brings to the classroom.”

Samples of Coursework Demonstrating Mastery of the Goal:
2. Course Development Project.   The course development project not only synthesizes all of the information gained in APLNG 806, but the Certificate Program as a whole. I had to develop and/or adapt culturally appropriate and level appropriate materials, create a learning environment that allows all learners to be successful, generate goals and objectives, and discriminate between and write assessments.
